Introduction 经典简介
The I Ching, also known as the Book of Changes, is one of China's oldest classics, honored as the source of the great Dao. Through eight trigrams and sixty-four hexagrams, it explains the patterns of universal change, containing ancient Chinese philosophical reflections on nature, society, and life.
Traditionally, it is believed that the eight trigrams of the I Ching were created by Fu Xi, while King Wen of Zhou provided explanations for the hexagrams, forming the hexagram statements. The Duke of Zhou wrote the line statements, and Confucius wrote the "Ten Wings" (the Commentaries) providing systematic interpretations.
The I Ching is not merely a divination book, but a philosophical work that contains core concepts of traditional Chinese philosophy such as yin-yang, the five elements, and the unity of heaven and humanity, having a profound influence on Chinese culture.
Core Philosophy 核心思想
The core philosophy of the I Ching can be summarized as “change,” “simplicity,” and “constancy.” “Change” refers to the constant transformation of all things; “simplicity” means the universe operates according to simple principles; “constancy” indicates there are unchanging truths within change.
The I Ching emphasizes “The movement of heaven is full of power. Thus the superior man makes himself strong and untiring. The earth's condition is receptive devotion. Thus the superior man who has breadth of character carries the outer world,” encouraging people to be vigorous and persevering like heaven, and receptive and nurturing like earth.
