Key Chapters

The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao; The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth. The named is the mother of ten thousand things. Ever desireless, one can see the mystery. Ever desiring, one can see the manifestations. These two spring from the same source but differ in name; this appears as darkness. Darkness within darkness. The gate to all mystery.

The highest good is like water. Water benefits all things without contention. It stays in places that others disdain. Thus it is like the Tao. In dwelling, be close to the land. In meditation, go deep in the heart. In dealing with others, be gentle and kind. In speech, be true. In ruling, be just. In business, be competent. In action, be timely. No fight: No blame.

He who knows others is wise; He who knows himself is enlightened. He who conquers others has physical strength; He who conquers himself is strong. He who is content is rich. He who acts with persistence has will. He who does not lose his place will endure. He who dies but does not perish has longevity.

Nothing in the world is softer and weaker than water. But for attacking the hard and strong, nothing can surpass it. For there is nothing that can take its place. That the weak overcomes the strong, and the soft overcomes the hard, everyone in the world knows, but none can practice it.
